Usually they are given special permits, typically in the form of a key, remote control or PIN code – sometimes access is even automated conveniently via number plate recognition.
But what if you forgot your permit or if you are a guest and have not been given one in advance?

Case Study
Traffic light and bollard
control in Bern
Residential streets that are used as shortcuts; too much traffic in what are actually traffic-calmed zones and old towns; many cities know these problems, including Bern. In order to further calm traffic, especially in the listed city centre, the Swiss city had been looking for a new traffic light and bollard system including intercom columns. Twelve existing installations are to be replaced and five new ones built by 2020 as part of the civil engineering department's value preservation strategy.
